Facts About Monsoon Season in Arizona

Arizona Living
Arizona living can become a bit unusual in the summer. One of those unique aspects is the annual “Monsoon Season.” This interesting period (lasting from June 15 to September 30) helps bring the rainfall that is so desperately needed in the desert. Here’s what you should know about Monsoon Season.

Humidity
While it’s expected that Arizonans will experience high temperatures in the summer months, the humidity may be a surprise. While anything about 10% is something to talk about, typical monsoon humidity can range in the 30-40% range.

Heavy Rain
During monsoon season, the clouds roll in quickly and might drop sprinkles or torrents of rain. Storms are usually short lived but help us get over half of our annual rainfall in just a few short months. July and August see the heaviest volume and it may rain several times a week for short bursts or sustained soaking.

Dust Storms
Another distinctive characteristic of Arizona living in the summer is a phenomenon called a Dust Storm. This is a very interesting weather event that starts as a small dust storm in the flat lands of the desert. The dust is stirred by wind, often as part of a microburst storm cell. As the dust builds it forms a substantial wall that can be miles high and wide. The sight is very impressive as it moves quickly across the valley, reducing visibility to nearly zero and leaving a wake of dust and sand in its path. Avoid driving in Dust Storms as they are detrimental to your vehicle and also result in many serious accidents.

Wet Roads & Flooding
Monsoon rain causes some unexpected effects on the roadways. Heavy rainfall runs off the hard desert ground and can quickly flood roads and washes. Never enter an area where the road is covered by water as it may be several feet deep and could make your vehicle float. Rain mixing with the oils on the road can cause very slippery surfaces. Never use cruise control in wet conditions as you can easily hydroplane.

The annual monsoon is a fascinating part of Arizona living. It helps hydrate the thirsty desert and replenish the water supply the growing valley needs. If you are thinking of moving to this beautiful valley, contact us to start your search!
